How to Remove Someone from a Group Photo
Remove a person from a group photo without ruining the people next to them. Brushing order, overlap tips and how to fix gaps with AI replace.

Group photos are the hardest place to remove someone. People stand shoulder to shoulder, arms overlap and the background is often hidden. But it's also one of the most common requests — an ex in the family photo, a stranger who joined the shot, a colleague who left the team.
This guide focuses on the specific tricks that make group edits work. For the basics, start with how to remove people from photos.
Check where the person stands
| Position | Difficulty | Why |
|---|---|---|
| At the end of the row | Easy | One neighbor, background visible |
| Behind others | Medium | Only head and shoulders to remove |
| In the middle, not touching | Medium | Two neighbors, small gap |
| In the middle, arms around others | Hard | Overlapping bodies |
Step by step with Erase Spark
1. Start with the easy parts
Open Erase Spark, choose Remove Object and brush over the parts of the person that don't touch anyone else — usually head, torso and legs.
2. Stay inside their outline
Near neighbors, use a smaller brush and paint slightly inside the person's edge. It's better to leave a few pixels for a second pass than to erase part of someone you want to keep.
3. Erase and look at the gap
Tap Erase. The AI fills the space with background — or, if the background was hidden, with something plausible.
4. Remove overlapping arms separately
An arm resting on someone's shoulder is easiest to remove in its own pass after the body is gone.
5. Close the gap if needed
If the group now has an awkward empty space in the middle, try replacing it with something neutral like "a potted plant" — or crop the photo tighter after editing.
Things to watch for
- Hands on other people. A hand left on a shoulder with no body attached is the classic giveaway.
- Shadows on the ground and on neighbors.
- Reflections in windows or sunglasses behind the group.
- Symmetry. Rows of people look odd with a big gap; cropping helps.

Frequently asked questions
Can I remove one person from a group photo?
Yes. It's easiest when they're at the edge of the group. People in the middle need careful brushing near their neighbors.
How do I remove someone whose arm is around another person?
Remove the body first, then erase the arm in a separate pass with a small brush, staying inside its outline.
What if there's a gap where the person stood?
Fill it with AI replace using a neutral prompt, or crop the photo to bring the group closer together.
Will the people next to them be affected?
Only if the brush touches them. Use a smaller brush near their edges and compare before and after.
